Dorm Room Fund: Backing Student Founders From Day One

Some of the most iconic startups began on campus. Facebook started in a dorm room, and today that same student-driven energy is still fueling new companies. Dorm Room Fund (DRF) exists to back those founders early — while they’re still in school, recently graduated, or even dropped out to chase an idea.

What is Dorm Room Fund?

DRF is the original student-run VC fund. It started over a decade ago under First Round Capital and became independent in 2021. The model is simple:

  • Who we invest in: students, recent grads, and dropouts building companies in any sector

  • Who makes the decisions: 60+ student partners across four regions (NYC & Midwest, Boston & Northeast, Philly & Southeast, and West Coast)

  • How it works: founders pitch, student partners deliberate, and investments are made by majority vote

Last year, the New York City/Midwest team backed four startups. Multiply that across all regions, and DRF is writing dozens of first checks each year.

From Dorm Rooms to Unicorns

Some of DRF’s portfolio has gone on to massive success:

  • Cursor – DRF alum Michael Truell went from student partner to founder. DRF wrote one of the first checks, and today the company is valued at $9.9B.

  • Prepared AI – Launched at Yale to improve 911 emergency response. DRF invested early, then First Round, Andreessen Horowitz, and most recently General Catalyst led their Series C.

These stories show how much talent and scrappiness live on university campuses.

How to Plug In

Campuses are full of builders tackling problems with fresh eyes. DRF gives them capital, mentorship, and a strong alumni network — but it’s not just about money, it’s about connection.

  • If you’re a student: reach out to one of the 60+ DRF partners across the country

  • If you’re an investor or operator: get involved in campus ecosystems — judge a pitch competition, host office hours, or co-host an event with DRF to meet founders early

The next generation of unicorns is already being built in dorm rooms and libraries. Dorm Room Fund is here to meet them at the start.
