From plant-based Impossible Foods for humans to PawCo for pets

5 questions for Dr. Mahsa Vazin
1. What problem or opportunity are you tackling?
The plant-based pet food market, valued at $26 billion in 2022, is fueled by the growing vegan movement and the desire among pet owners to humanize their furry companions. Additionally, studies consistently identify beef, dairy products, and chicken as the top allergens for dogs.
PawCo is a third-generation dog food, which tackles the drawbacks of traditional kibble and offers a cost-effective, allergen-free alternative to fresh animal pet food. We invented "GreenMeat," the first fresh, plant-based meat AI-optimized for dogs.
With PawCo, pet owners can provide their pets with a nutritious, meat-like alternative while supporting sustainability.
2. What’s the unique insight you have in this area?
As a nanoscientist and former lead scientist at ImpossibleFoods, I have a unique perspective on food science and its potential to make the world a better place for pets, all other animals and the environment. We have created a meat-alternative pet food that is just as nutritious and satisfying as what they are used to eating - but is so much more sustainable. We don’t have to give up anything. PawCo’s mission is a reflection of that inspiration.
3. If your startup is wildly successful, how will the world be a different place?
PawCo addresses three key pet food challenges: sustainability, animal welfare and nutrition. PawCo is going to be a leading provider of plant-based pet food, offering a scalable and sustainable alternative to animal-based pet foods.
I imagine a future where PawCo offers healthy and delicious pet food options for various tastes and budget. PawCo can potentially extend the lifespan of dogs by up to 10 dog years (equivalent to 1.5 human years). We’d also vastly reduce the need for animal farming, therefore reducing carbon emissions and deforestation.
4. What’s the most impressive thing your company has achieved to date?
We utilized proprietary optimization methods for our products, ensuring they are not only healthy and tasty but also provide complete and balanced nutrition for dogs. By harnessing the power of AI, we have unlocked an infinite number of product possibilities in a remarkably short timeframe. To date, we've successfully launched six products, and we have plans to introduce an additional ten products—including toppers, treats, and new recipes—over the next 12 to 18 months.
Without the aid of AI, the development and launch of ten products would require years of extensive research, development, and trial and error. However, with our innovative approach, we can expedite the process while maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficacy.
5. What should we look out for in the coming year?
Our goal at PawCo is to establish our brand as a household name, offering a diverse range of products to cater to every dog's taste and budget. Through our extensive product lineup, we strive to ensure that every dog has access to delicious, healthy, and allergen-free food options. Whether a dog prefers a specific flavor or has dietary restrictions, PawCo is committed to providing a solution that meets their needs. With our dedication to quality and variety, we aim to become the go-to choice for pet owners seeking nutritious and satisfying meals for their beloved companions.
